How Does Therapy Work?
Intervention Block Model
Following assessment, children who are recommended for therapy enter our Intervention Block Model.
Therapy With Purpose.
Goals. Progress. Review
At Each Speech Pear Plum Speech Pathology, we believe therapy should be intentional, meaningful and focused on outcomes that matter.
Rather than simply attending therapy week after week, we work within structured Intervention Blocks designed to ensure support remains goal-directed, evidence-informed and responsive to your child's changing needs.
Every block includes dedicated time for planning, intervention, review and decision-making.
Because meaningful progress doesn't happen by accident.

Why We Use Intervention Blocks
Children grow, learn and change over time.
Goals evolve.
Priorities shift.
Needs change.
That's why we don't believe in therapy continuing indefinitely without regular opportunities to pause, reflect and determine what support is most appropriate moving forward.

Step 1: Parent Consultation & Goal Setting
Before therapy begins, we meet with parents and caregivers to understand:
-
Current concerns
-
Family priorities
-
Everyday challenges
-
Existing supports
-
Desired outcomes
Together, we identify goals that are meaningful, achievable and relevant to everyday life.
This is where we answer:
"What are we working towards?"
Step 2: Clinical Planning & Evidence-Based Programming
Following the consultation, your clinician undertakes dedicated planning and preparation.
This may include:
-
Reviewing assessment findings
-
Reviewing current evidence
-
Selecting intervention approaches
-
Developing therapy plans
-
Creating resources
-
Preparing home support strategies
This work happens behind the scenes but forms an important part of delivering high-quality support.
This is where we answer:
"How are we going to get there?"

Step 3: Therapy & Support
Therapy is typically delivered over a 10-week intervention block.
Sessions may occur:
-
In clinic
-
At school
-
At kindergarten
-
Via telehealth
-
In community settings
Dependant on your child's goals and service plan.
Intervention is tailored to your child's strengths, interests, communication style and support needs.
Throughout the block, we continue to monitor progress and adapt support as required.
This is where we answer:
"What does support look like?"
Step 4: Parent Consultation & Review
At the conclusion of the intervention block, we meet with parents and caregivers to review:
-
Progress towards goals
-
Outcomes achieved
-
Ongoing challenges
-
Recommendations moving forward
This provides an opportunity to celebrate successes, ask questions and make informed decisions about next steps.
This is where we answer:
"What has changed?"

Step 5: Determining Next Steps
Not every child requires the same level of support forever.
Following review, recommendations may include:
Continue Therapy
For children who would benefit from ongoing intervention.
Modify Goals
As new priorities emerge.
Adjust Therapy Frequency
Increasing or reducing support based on progress and needs.
Allied Health Assistant Programs
Where appropriate, children may transition to an Allied Health Assistant program under Speech Pathologist supervision.
Parent Coaching
Supporting families to implement strategies within everyday routines.
Discharge
When goals have been achieved or ongoing therapy is no longer required.

Individualised Support
While our Intervention Block model forms the foundation of how we deliver therapy, we recognise that every child and family is unique.
Our standard approach includes planning, intervention and review; however, clinical recommendations are always individualised.
In some circumstances, alternative intervention schedules, frequencies or block lengths may be recommended based on a child's goals, diagnosis, response to intervention or individual support needs.
For example, children with Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS), intensive literacy goals or complex communication needs may require a different intervention structure to achieve the best outcomes.
Our goal is not to fit every child into the same model. Our goal is to provide the right support, at the right time, in the right way.
What Success Looks Like
Success looks different for every child and family.
For some children, success may be producing speech sounds more clearly.
For others, it may be communicating their needs, making a friend, participating in classroom discussions, expanding food variety, developing literacy skills or feeling more confident in everyday situations.
Our goal is not to achieve a particular score, milestone or outcome for every child.
Our goal is to support meaningful participation in everyday life and help children develop the skills, confidence and supports they need to communicate, learn, connect and participate in ways that are meaningful to them.
That's why we regularly review goals, celebrate progress and adapt our recommendations as children grow and their needs change.
