Assessment Process
Understanding Your Child Starts With Understanding The Whole Picture
Our assessment process is designed to help us understand your child's strengths, challenges, everyday participation and the goals that matter most to your family.
Rather than relying on a single appointment, we complete assessment across three sessions, allowing us to gather information from multiple perspectives and develop meaningful recommendations.

Session 1: Getting To Know Your Child
In-Person Appointment
During the first session we begin getting to know your child through a combination of:
-
Play-based interaction
-
Observation
-
Discussion with caregivers
-
Informal and formal assessment activities where appropriate
Our goal is to understand your child's communication, learning, participation and strengths.
Session 2: Assessment Across Everyday Environments
In-Person Appointment
The second assessment session allows us to build a more complete picture of your child's skills and participation.
Depending on your child's goals, this session may occur:
-
In our clinic
-
At kindergarten
-
At school
-
In another relevant environment
This helps us understand how your child communicates and participates in everyday settings.

Session 3: Parent Feedback, Planning & Recommendations
Telehealth Appointment
Following the assessment sessions, we meet with parents or caregivers via telehealth to discuss:
Assessment findings
Your child's strengths
Areas where support may be helpful
Recommendations
Questions and next steps
Many families find this discussion provides the information they need to confidently move forward.
Why Do We Assess Across Three Sessions?
Every child is different.
We know children often show us different skills in different situations, which is why we don't rely on a single appointment to understand the whole picture.
Our three-session assessment process allows us to:
Build rapport and help your child feel comfortable
Understand your child's strengths across different environments
Explore communication, learning, participation and everyday experiences
Gather information from the people who know your child best
Provide more meaningful recommendations and next steps
Give families time to ask questions and feel confident moving forward
Assessment is not about finding what's "wrong" with a child.
It's about understanding their strengths, identifying where support may be helpful and creating a plan that helps them communicate, learn, connect and participate with confidence.
What Happens After Assessment?
Assessment is the first step in understanding your child's strengths, challenges and support needs.
If therapy is recommended, we don't simply book ongoing appointments and hope for the best.
At ESPP, therapy is delivered through structured Intervention Blocks designed to ensure support remains purposeful, evidence-based and focused on meaningful outcomes.
